Harmonie Club Re-Dux

In 2007, the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center shifted its focus for location to the historically significant Harmonie Park district in Detroit, Michigan. This project is grounded by the search for rich and multi-layered spaces for the contemporary disciplines of urban art, poetry, music, theatre and song. Carried over from the original concept is the notion of a tectonic quilt where art, events, and places are re-visioned and re-stitched as they are woven into the architecture.

The renovation of the Harmonie Club to house the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Center is guided by principles of sustainable responsible design, but is equally balanced by the desire to establish the Carr Center as a regionally and nationally recognized center for the celebration of African and African-American arts and culture.
